Detailed description of MTM courses

1.MTM seminar for managers

The MTM seminar for managers is an introduction into individual MTM data systems and provides an overview of all the important aspects, without going into too much detail. It presents the problems that are of importance and relates them to MTM application at a company. The training is targeted at those people who will not become analysts, but should have the knowledge of general principles and the skills sufficient to comprehend the analyses. Those are mainly managers of various levels (e.g. CEO, production manager, technology manager, KVP manager etc.). The seminar consists of the following thematic blocks:

  • MTM position within Industrial Engineering
  • Overview of MTM systems (MTM-1, SDB, UAS, MEK, PROKON)
  • Data architecture (data construction and use)
  • Workplace design
  • MTM deployment and utilization in a company
  • Global Production System (GPS)
  • TiCon® software
  • Job evaluation
  • Concept of MTM courses.

2.Seminar on Global Production System (GPS)

The seminar content was drawn up in cooperation between Volkswagen Coaching GmbH and the German MTM Association to offer a direct link between theory and practice.

During the five-day practical training based on simulation, the participants are introduced to the individual modules of Global Production System (GPS) and then offered a hands-on experience. The simulation consists in building two competitive ‘assembly lines’. While the participants are trying to achieve the best performance, they get involved in Best Practice Sharing.

Seminar content:

  • process modules for planning and time study, as well as for timing assembly line production.
  • PDCA cycle in the continuous improvement process
  • MTM as a method and tool in the Global Production System (GPS)
  • other GPS methods, e.g. Brainstorming, Ishikawa-Diagram, five „Whys", KVP-Workshop, seven MUDA (waste), 5A Programme, Mind Map
  • useful value analysis and comparison of work systems as a practical application of Best Practice Sharing

The discussion of individual modules includes a presentation of the necessary theoretical background and the interaction with other methods and tools. The measurable and visualised outcome demonstrates how productivity is affected by such parameters as costs, quality and delivery timing. The selected approach guarantees an interesting and variable course of the seminar and offers better learning results in comparison to the seminars including no practical simulation.

Eligibility criteria:

Completed training in sales or crafts

3.Standardizing Methods (e.g. Time Study, Work Sampling)

The knowledge of various techniques of motion time measurement facilitates selection of those best suited for a specific measurement. For an optimum implementation of work improvement projects it is advisable to know as many available techniques as possible.
Among the human work timing techniques, the MTM techniques are the most advanced and accurate. However, frequently there is a need to use other measurement methods.
The course in Standardizing Methods is addressed both to the beginners and to the specialists willing to expand their knowledge.
The course includes an overview of the most important measurement techniques, with particular regard paid to one of them (according to the  participants’ preference):

  • Time study
  • Work sampling
  • Self-notation, data registration (BDE)
  • Comparison and estimation
  • Time standardization
  • Predetermined motion time systems (MTM)
  • Assigning predetermined time

The course may be expanded to cover a few techniques in full detail; this requires course extension by a few days.

Eligibility criteria:

None

4.Basic method (MTM-1)

The techniques for identification of an optimum method of job performance, based on predetermined motion time analysis. MTM-1 is used for standardization and optimization of the production processes which are mass or large-lot in character. This method is the springboard for other MTM systems. During the two-week course, the participants get acquainted with both the theory and practice of the method’s application. The training is based on case studies.

After the course completion, a participant is able to analyse a selected job course by means of the MTM-1 Basic Method, predetermine the time of an existing or planned operation, define the number of staff necessary to carry out the job and streamline the workplace (elimination of unnecessary motions, waste, etc.).

Course content:

  • Introduction to MTM systems
  • Basic concepts of the MTM-1 system
  • Basic MTM-1 motions and their determinants
  • Analysis performance and method accuracy
  • Defining predetermined times

MTM Standard Data is a system worked out on the basis of the MTM-1 basic method. Alike all the predetermined motion time methods, the standard data are used for analysing manual jobs in view of work method designing and time calculation.
In comparison with MTM-1, MTM standard data offer a simpler analytical system, which requires much less time to provide sufficiently accurate data for large-lot or mass production. 6.MTM-2

One advantage of the MTM-2 method is that outpaces the MTM-1 Basic Method on which it is based, producing results in half the time. It also offers the capability of being combined with other MTM data. The method is designed for the production types which require detailed description, e.g. large-lot or mass production. The MTM-2 course provides the knowledge and skills necessary for the practical application of this method.

Course content:

  • Development of predetermined motion time systems
  • Basic concepts of MTM-1 Basic Method

7.Universal Analysis System (UAS)

One of the most popular MTM techniques nowadays. The ‘universal’ designation is related to the option of applying UAS to any manual work in various areas with the batch production characteristics. The UAS system allows working out time standards and determining the optimum job performance methods along the entire value stream through analysis based on predetermined time for any production with the batch characteristics. It accurately identifies bottlenecks and motions carrying no value, thereby facilitating their elimination. During the course, the participants get acquainted with the multi-layered structure of the system as well as the principles of conducting analyses and the data structure.

The MTM-UAS course covers the content and method of constructing a system of MTM modules, which includes basic and standard processes, and builds the skills necessary to use them.

Just like the MTM methods, the philosophy of Lean Thinking gains worldwide recognition across all sectors of economy.
The application of MTM tools in the Lean Thinking philosophy facilitates a still more effective process design. Concurrent application of MTM tools and Lean Thinking enables elimination of even hardly visible waste (MUDA). Therefore we can say:

‘There’s no good Lean without MTM’

Optimization and Improvement – vision of MTM and Lean Manufacturing (basics)

The course participants get acquainted with the principles and terminology of Lean Manufacturing, both in theory and in case studies, involving the use of standard tools, e.g.  TPM, 5S, SMED, Kazein. The case studies are selected from an array of industries; thus the participants may compare their own experience with that of other sectors. The companies who have deployed the TPM system see decreased plant and device breakdown rates and the resulting improvement in quality and production efficiency. In many cases, they have achieved a 30ncrease in productivity and 90eduction of reject rate. Most companies applying 5S have achieved a 60eduction of inventories and work in progress.  The floor area has been reduced by 15They see an improved comfort of work and employee commitment. The SMED methodology enables shrinking of the refitting time by as much as 70Apart from the knowledge of Lean, the participants have a chance to get acquainted with the MTM tools for optimization of production processes in all sectors of economy, are able to determine MUDA without any problems and identify the optimum work methods.
